I’m Solethu Toe, a self-taught South African visual artist based in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Painting is at the heart of my practice, but I simply love creating—whether through writing, experimenting with different materials, DIY projects, or exploring a new idea.
My work explores identity, womanhood, cultural roots, and the many layers of being human. Through bold color, expressive portraits, and symbolism, I make space for the parts of ourselves that can seem contradictory: softness and strength, confidence and vulnerability, anger and hope.
“My paintings reflect an ongoing process of self-discovery, with room for complexity and change.”
Often, the meaning of a piece reveals itself as I create. She Speaks in Color began without a plan and became a reflection on feeling angry with the world while choosing to protect my heart and values. Walking Contradiction explores the different sides of a person and the beauty of still getting to know yourself.
As a self-taught artist, I’m always learning, experimenting, and developing my craft. I value the freedom to follow my curiosity and let my work evolve alongside me.
Beyond my own practice, I’m the co-founder and Creative Director of Lovestone, a digital agency where I help fellow artists and business owners build their online presence and communicate the stories behind their work.
